You Don't Have to Sit on the Floor: Making Buddhism Part of Your Everyday Life

You Don't Have to Sit on the Floor: Making Buddhism Part of Your Everyday Life

This is a Buddhism book for the rest of us. Jim Pym explains how to make Buddhism part of daily life while being true to one’s own customs and beliefs. He points out that Buddha never asked people to accept anything simply because it was religious doctrine. Brought up as a Christian, he draws on his own experiences to show how opening the way for East to meet West enriches spirituality. An active member of a Buddhist-Christian dialogue group for over ten years, Pym firmly believes there is one thing better than being either a Buddhist or a Christian ? being both.

Jim Pym calls for what may be called a Christianized version of Buddhism, one appropriate for those who have grown up in a Christian culture. In You Don't Have to Sit on the Floor, Pym introduces Buddhism according to how he has practiced it and grown in it. He begins with his flight from Christianity, unable to take it on faith alone. He thus presents Buddhism first as an experience-based, pragmatic solution to suffering. Finding the path of sitting meditation less fruitful than expected, however, Pym gravitated toward Pure Land (Shin) Buddhism, and was eventually ordained a priest. With strong elements of faith, surrender, and grace, Pure Land's attraction for a former Christian is obvious. Incorporating faith back into his life, Pym introduces us to the power of belief in Buddhist deities, prayer, and mantra, then he returns to Christianity to build a bridge between the two religions, supplementing Christianity with meditative practices, and "find[ing] a place for God" in Western Buddhism. Brilliantly written, You Don't Have to Sit on the Floor will appeal to the many who are attracted to Buddhism but also feel a pull toward the divine. --Brian Bruya

Are you for REAL?

Are you for REAL?

Mimes cover themselves with metallic paint and pose like statues on streetcorners. Crossdressers are so convincing that Olympic committees work with doctors and labs, just to figure it out. Filmmakers and photographers manipulate reality everyday with computers, and call it "special effects." We've learned that we can no longer trust what our eyes tell us. Perhaps that's why this 3-year-old in the local park had to check for herself--to determine if the bronze people on the bench were real or merely "art".

Of course, the word "art" comes from "artifice"--meaning trickery; guile; craftiness. And it isn't only visual--as "Nowhere Man" once said, "if I spoke plain, you'd soon find out, I don't know what I talk about" (good words to remember as the political season comes upon us).

Day 85/365 ~ There's that Fallen Heart Feeling that You Rushed right through the Moments

March 1, 2011.

"No matter how careful you are, there's going to be the sense you missed something, the collapsed feeling under your skin that you didn't experience it all. There's that fallen heart feeling that you rushed right through the moments where you should've been paying attention. Well, get used to that feeling. That's how your whole life will feel some day. This is all practice."— Chuck Palahniuk

I'll miss chasing the light.
