The School Office, Sanawar

The School Office, Sanawar

The School Office, The Lawrence School, Sanawar, Shimla Hils, Himachal Pradesh, India.

This large spacious building was built in 1868 as the Headmistress’s house and was in close proximity to both the girl’s boarding house, now the boy’s holding house and the girl’s school, now the Parker Hall complex.

It is built in the typical style of the period with pyramid tin roof and a large preponderance of wod both on the roof and the floors. What must have been a beautiful verandah running around the building, has now been enclosed to create additional office space.

In the past the School Office was not much frequented by children and so did not occupy any great place in their memories. Now of course it has also houses the PCO from which children are permitted the rare phone call home. Ans as a result, for Sanawarians of the present generation the School Office will become indelibly linked with all the momentous news, both of joy and sadness, which they communicate to their parents.

A very ordinary and unpretentious flight of cement steps lead the way to the Headmaster’s Office. It is at the top of these steps that all defaulters wait to see what punishment is in store for them and for these unfortunates the steps become gloomy and forbidding.

Central Building - London Public School - Built 1867

The Central Building in London, Ohio served virtually every possible age group over its 137 years of service. The school was dedicated June 21, 1867 and was built at a cost of $50,000. The building - the oldest continually operating school in the state - was finally put out of commission by a new elementary school that opened in 2004.

This picture shows the building in its original three story design. The third floor, designed as a large hall for exhibits, etc. was removed some years later leaving only two stories remaining. The building still stands today but is planned for demolition in 2009. At that time school system and the city of London will complete a planned land swap that will see the city taking over the downtown campus to house city offices and departments while the school takes over city owned land adjacent to the north campus for construction of a new middle school.

Architecture of Schools: The New Learning Environments

This is the standard design guide on schools architecture, providing vital information on school architecture.

Mark Dudek views school building design as a particularly specialised field encompassing ever changing educational theories, the subtle spatial and psychological requirements of growing children and practical issues that are unique to these types of building.

He explores the functional requirements of individual spaces, such as classrooms, and shows how their incorporation within a single institution area are a defining characteristic of the effective educational environment.

Acoustics, impact damage, the functional differentiation of spaces such as classrooms, music rooms, craft activities and gymnasium, within a single institution are all dealt with. More esoteric factors such as the effects on behaviour of colour, light, surface texture and imagery are considered in addition to the more practical aspects of designing for comfort and health.

Chapter 4 comprises 20 case studies which address those issues important in the creation of modern school settings. They are state of the art examples from all parts of the world. These examples include: Pokstown Down Primary, Bournemouth; Haute Vallee School, Jersey; Heinz-Galinski School, Berlin; Anne Frank School, Papendract, Netherlands; Seabird Island School, British Columbia and The Little Village Academy, Chicago.

*Provides a detailed design guide on schools and sets the standard for future design

*International and well-illustrated case studies show the theory put into practice
